Despite a recent surge in popularity, tattoos are nothing new. In fact, the art of the tattoo actually dates back over 5,000 years. Archaeologists have discovered tattoos on mummified Egyptian females in the form of groups of dots and dashes and abstract geometric patterns. It is thought that the Egyptians were responsible for spreading the art of tattooing to the rest of the world.
Nowadays, people get tattoos for a variety of different reasons. In the past few decades, it was seen as a form of rebellion, and people flocked to the tattoo parlor to prove that they were tough and cutting edge. Now, everyone and their grandmother seems to have a tattoo and thus it has lost it's appeal in that respect.
However, getting inked has remained a popular trend. One common reason to get a tattoo is to commemorate a particular person or event, such as the loss of a loved one. The idea that they will have a permanent reminder of that person with them at all times is comforting for some. Others get a tattoo to celebrate an accomplishment, such as the birth of a child or the completion of an important achievement.
For some, the experience of getting a tattoo and the pain and suffering that is usually involved, is just as important as the actual end result.
Finally, there are those who just appreciate the tattoo as an art form or feel that the "decoration" makes them more attractive.
Reality TV shows, such as TLC's Miami Ink and LA Ink have renewed public interest in the art of the tattoo.
