The loss of a loved one can be the most painful experience a person will ever have to face. Even if a family is aware that their loved one only has a short time to live, they will never be prepared. There is no way to emotionally prepare for what is to come, but there are ways to assist a friend or family member when they suffer the loss of someone very close to them.
Be a Good Listener
When someone is coping with grief and loss, they may have a difficult time talking about what has happened to them. When they do speak, the tears will flow and their voice will be filled with emotion. During this time, it is very important that the person know that they are not alone. It is unhealthy for them to keep their feelings bottled up inside, so allow them to express their feelings.
Provide Words of Encouragement
Words can be the most powerful medicine for someone who is coping with grief and loss. Thoughts and expressions of sincerity, kindness and compassion can help with the healing process. Purchase a Hallmark card or add a personal touch by writing a poem in memory of the deceased. A personal note or thought will be much appreciated by the person who is coping with loss.
Encourage Them To Join a Grief or Bereavement Support Group
Many individuals who suffer a loss join a support group. The purpose of this group is to provide emotional support to individuals who have lost a loved one (such as a spouse). This will give them an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings with people who are going through the same experience. They will meet new people and realize that they are not alone and there is life after a difficult loss.
Take A Trip Down Memory Lane
If someone has suffered a loss, their memories of the deceased will always live on. Families should help the person who is grieving to remember the good times and positive experiences of their loved one.
Make Their Dreams Come True
When someone is coping with loss or grief, they may begin to question their own mortality. They begin to think about the places they have always wanted to visit (such as their hometown or country) and things they have always wanted to do. Schedule a family trip or vacation so that the person who is going through a difficult time has a chance to experience their dreams.
