The Republican party might be able to have a face, if they ever decide who they want it to be. After having the White House for eight years and using a political strategy of attacking character, they find themselves without a clear character or personality of their own.
They can thank, or blame, Barack Obama for that. The presidential campaign would have been far easier if Hillary Clinton had gotten the nomination. They could have pulled out the old Clinton attacks, the same way they did when Bill was running for office - and it might have had some effect. But with Barack Obama, they could not. He was younger, he was fresher, he was hip - and he kept his cool. This made the Republicans look like a bunch of nasty, mean spirited thugs, who were in favor of business and let the people be damned. The war and the economy did not help their cause either and for the first time in nearly a decade, they had to play catch up and they were not comfortable with it.
So, who will be the face of the Republican party? Let's answer the reverse. Let's see who it won't be.
Michael Steele - Doomed from the start, Steele was elected head of the Republican party because Obama was elected President of the United States. The party talked about getting a fresh look and a new start, but America didn't buy it. Steele started off strongly enough. He talked about where he and the president disagreed but how they could create a new standard of working together, that wouldn't be concillatory of any of the party values, but would still be great for the nation.
Great! But then came Rush Limbaugh and the great apology. Michael Steele is now a joke to most of the nation. What may even be more noted is that he is something of a joke within the black community. That is significant because the minority vote is one the Republicans have been seeking to gain ground. The rise of Michael Steele was done as a way to fool the people into thinking the party had changed. If Steele had stood his ground with Limbaugh, that would have made great strides with the voting public. His failure to do so will cause his failure as head of the party. Now that the little experiment is over, you can look for Steele to be replaced.
Sarah Palin - Not likely, unless she can completely retool herself and come off as being smarter, brighter, more in touch and keep her family drama out of the news. I come from Illinois, where we had Blagojevich, so my expectations of a governor aren't that high. I am ready to believe
