by Megan Mcdiarmid

It was the morning of the last time Penny Johnson new that she would be happy. Her only love was leaving for war. They had been clinging to eachother since the moment they had awoken. Penny knew that there was a large chance that Johnathan would die and that was what made Penny cry as she had been now. Penny touched Johnathan's cheek with desire. He rested his head in her palm.

"I don't want you to go," Penny said as she clung to him. A single tear rolled down her cheek.

"I don't want to go," Johnathan said in a low, meaningful voice.

"Then don't," she begged, another tear falling onto her cheek. "We can run from here. We can go somewhere."

"They'll find me if I do," Johnathansaid in the same low voice. He held on to Penny, one hand clutching Penny's head of golden hair.

Penny was weeping now. "I dont know what I'll do with out you John."

"I'll be back before you know," he told her and looked into her eyes. He wiped her tears away with two fingers and brushed her hair back from her face. "Don't cry Pen."

"I cant help myself. I keep thinking you wont return," she said weakly.

"Don't think like that," he said. "I'll be back and then we'll get married and make a family."

Penny cried even more.

"Would you like that Pen?" he asked. "Would you like to make a family with me?"

Penny nodded quickly. "I want to. I want to have children with you."

Johnathan kissed her head and spoke into her hair. "Keep that thought Pen. Think of all the babies we'll have."

It was silent for a moment as Penny and Johnathan both pictured their children.

"If you hold that thought, I'll hold the thought of you in your white dress," he told her.

"I'll always love you John," Penny whispered into his neck.

"I love you more than anything Pen, always will," Johnathan said to her. He grabbed Penny by the waist and kissed her long and hard.

"Gunner Adams!" The Commanding Officer called to Johnathan. "Gunner Adams! We gotta go, boy!"

Johnathan let go of their kiss and looked Penny deep into her eyes. "I love you Penny. I love you." Johnathan slipped something into Penny's dress pocket.

He jogged to the helicopter that was about to take off. Penny waved to him, tears streaming down her face, ruining her makeup. It started to rain. Penny pulled out the item from her pocket. It was a silver locket. Inside held her and Johnathan's black and white photograph. Penny cried, falling to her knees, the locket clutched in her hand. Her soon to be husband had left. He had left for the second world war and was gone for the next three years. Penny laid on the dirty tarmac in the rain and cried and cried for the only man she loved.
