The night I died
It was a dark and stormy night, the night I died. I was on my way to New York City, the big apple as they call it. I had left California behind to start a new life in a new city. Not only was I leaving California behind but I was leaving my old life behind as well and with it, my past. I had no family left anymore. I lost my brother in a car accident less than a month ago and my parents had been dead these last twenty years now. I had no friends to speak of. Not any that mattered. So after settling my brothers' affairs, I packed up my things and headed for New York.
I had two weeks to get there. I had a job interview in two weeks at a fairly large advertising agency. So, I decided I'd take my time and enjoy the cross country drive. I had scheduled a few stops along the way. The first stop was Las Vegas. I had never been there before and I had a blast while I was there. I even left with a few extra thousand bucks in my pocket. It seemed that ever since I left California, my luck had changed for the better, until tonight, that is.
As night came along, so did a storm. It was raining so hard that I had trouble seeing the road ahead of me. One minute I was driving down the highway and the next, my car was in a ditch, with the front end smashed into a tree. As I came to, I could feel the wetness on my forehead and face. At first I thought it was the rain. Then I reached up and touched above my right eyebrow and wow that hurt. I pulled back and my hand was covered in blood. I had felt a huge gash above my right eye. I looked around the car for my purse and reached in to grab my cell phone, but no luck, I was in the middle of nowhere and had no signal on the phone. So I sat there for a moment trying to decide what to do next and also trying to recall what happened.
I remember driving down the road and a large animal ran out in front of my car. A deer, I think. I tried to stop but the car just slid on the wet pavement. My right front tire caught a groove in the pavement and the steering wheel jerked in my hand. The pulled hard to the right and went off the road. Next thing, I woke and here I was.
Well it seemed I had no other choice but to either sit here in the car while the rain came in through the shattered windshield or get out and start walking. Hoping that I'll find someone. Before nightfall I had noticed that every few miles there where large farmhouses set back a few hundred yards from the highway. Hopefully I can find one sooner rather
