Father's Day is just as important as Mother's Day; yet America celebrates Mother's Day more. In fact, it is one of the most traveled days of the year, and more flowers are purchased during that time. Yet, Father's are (in many cases) forgotten. They are given smaller gifts like a tie, a wallet, or just a card. They are just as important as Mothers and we must show them that love.
Sometimes we don't realize their importance until they are gone. Because they, in most cases, will not ask for a gift or tell you what they want; sometimes they are ignored.
If you know your Dad's hobbies; purchase something that will be a part of the hobby. For example, if he loves golf; buy something that has golf clubs on it. A tee shirt, coffee mug, desk item; even if he has some already.
If your Dad likes to go out for breakfast or brunch; invite some family members or friends and surprise him. Or, cook him his favorite special breakfast or have it catered. If he is a loner or disabled; take him his favorite meal.
Some Dads go to church on Sundays. Ask if you can pick him up or meet him there (if you don't normally attend). Take him for brunch following the service.
If your Dad is one who goes to the barber every week; buy a gift certificate to his favorite barber and insert in his card.
Music is another gift that you can give to your Dad in some way. Some like outdoor festivals, others enjoy country music, and there are those who just prefer to listen to their favorite music in their cars. Purchase several of his favorite singers or treat him to a live performance.
Plan ahead in celebrating Father's Day to make sure that he does not have other plans. If your Mother is still alive, or he has a spouse; do check with them before planning a celebration to make sure that she has not scheduled something else. Maybe you can also merge your plans with hers.
The most important thing that you can do (if you do not have money) is to let your Dad know that you love him. Even hand-made cards work. Add something comical that you remember about him when you were growing up. Include his favorite sayings or add pictures of you, he, and the family to the card. This is not expensive; yet it is very personal and shows that you took the time to consider him.
Knowing your Dad's likes and dislikes is very important. Some men do not like crowds, others appreciate them. Remember, it should be as personal as possible because that will show that you took the time to consider him. He will know that your gift was not an "afterthought" which some people have done.
Make the day as special as possible. Dad's sometimes feel left out, even when they do not express this.
