Neverwinter Nights 2 is the plain vanilla of modern computer role playing games. It's yummy but a bit boring. After Obsidian's excellent Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 (ignoring the lame ending that wasn't Obsidian's fault darn Lucas Arts!) I was really expecting a lot from Neverwinter Nights 2. At first, I wasn't disappointed.
The tutorial in the main character's home town had me believing I was a tough country bumpkin ready to win a prize in a wrestling match while picking the best pig. Obsidian taught the basics of the game while keeping things interesting. And the two companions, Amie and Bevil were so well characterized that I looked forward to enjoying what else the game designers had in store for our little party. So imagine my disappointment when Amie died and Bevil dropped out of the party. By the time the game was over, I continued to feel that those two were the best in the game.
In terms of features, NWN 2 does just about everything right. It pushes every button and practically defines the state-of-the-art of Computer Roleplaying Games. There are many innovations here to get excited about.
Consider all the following features:
1.Influence with the NPCs but you can't make them all happy and must choose between them at times.
2.Tons of classes and prestige classes to choose from.
3.Excellent graphics (if a bit bland and sluggish)
4.Lots of dialog options that really let you role play how you'd like to. No really, I mean LOTS of dialog options.
5.Multiple endings. Wikipedia.com's article on NWN 2 says that it's even possible to join the evil side.
6.A story line where your character slowly build fame, and ask that fame grow, other characters will treat you differently.
7.Tons of variety on side quests. You can compete in a musical showdown, recruit allies for a war, fight a huge red dragon, and just about anything else you can think of.
8.The single best done court case scene in a CRPG. It's coolness floored me.
9.Handing out feats and titles to the character based on in-game accomplishments.
10.Strong storyline overall, if not as good as I originally hoped.
11.A full crafting system.
12.An incredible number of spells to choose from with exciting spell visual effects.
13.The campaign takes your character all the way from level 1 to level 20 (the maximum.)
14.The single most well done stronghold in an CRPG to date. You can build your stronghold, recruit guards, merchants, and lieutenants, fortify the castle, and finally defend it from attackers. Heck you can
