If you are familiar with any movie about boxing or have walked into a boxing gym, you will see many boxers jumping rope. There are many reasons that boxers choose jumping rope as their form of exercise. First of all, jumping rope, as you know, is an inexpensive workout. All you really need to invest in is a jump rope and a good pair of cross-training shoes.
Yes, there may be a financial benefit to jumping rope, but for a boxer, there are also physical benefits. Jumping rope is a great way to build endurance. A boxer needs to be able to last through a match, which means they need endurance. Imagine being that boxer in the last round; you need to be able to endure those last few minutes and box your way to victory.
Not only does a boxer need to be able to endure the length of a match, but they also need to develop their footwork to keep them in the game. Jumping rope is a great way to develop your footwork. When someone first starts out jumping rope, they do not have the coordination or footwork to do their best. It takes time and practice to become proficient with the jump rope. Once you are proficient with the basics of jumping rope, you can change up your workout to develop different types of footwork. There are so many different options for workouts with the jump rope that you will develop quality footwork in no time.
While developing footwork, you will also be strengthening your leg muscles. Jumping rope is a great workout to build strength in your muscles. A boxer will need that strength in their legs so they can remain standing throughout the duration of the match.
Training with the jump rope will also enhance your coordination and agility. A boxer cannot be successful unless they can display good coordination. They need to be able to bob, weave, and hit their mark. They also need to be able to do this with a quickness. By jumping rope, boxers can enhance all of these areas. Boxers tend to jump rope for 2-3 minute rounds, resting for only about 60 seconds, and jumping several rounds. Working out at those speeds will build the coordination, agility, and footwork that a boxer needs to be a success.
A good trainer for a boxer knows that jumping rope is an important part of a training program. If you want to enhance your agility, coordination, endurance, and footwork, jumping rope is a successful exercise. Best of all, it does not cost a lot to incorporate this into a training program.
