Eternal Sole
Leathered jaws
Hide a slipping tongue
And an ancient breath that speaks no words
But tells countless pungent tales.
Worn teeth chew
Through stubborn earth,
To soften the path
For younger,
Anxious soles.
Many ties are made and broken
On the long road of life.
And what is life but a footprint?
The marks we leave in the earth
For our children to follow
Till their growing soles
Better fill them,
And their own tracks stray
From guiding strides,
Eager to give new marks to fresh earth
With younger, lighter soles.

Through a window dimpled by time,
