Making the choice to breastfeed is a truly admirable decision. So much more can be said of a mother who breast-feeds, despite giving birth via a C-section.
I just happened to be one of those mothers. Not only did I attempt (and successfully) accomplish this feat on one occasion, I actually made a successful go of it for a second time around. It wasn't easy however.
Any mother who's had to endure a C-section; and the recovery thereafter; can tell you just how painful and exhaustive it can be. Add to those special circumstances the responsibility of breastfeeding, and you've got quite a challenge on your hand.
Fortunately, breastfeeding after a C-section is definitely possible. For me, it took four simple things; 1.) a great Boppy pillow, 2.) a persistent attitude, 3.) a support team, and 4.) listening to my body.
* The One, The Only- Boppy Pillow.
Hands down, one of the greatest inventions known to mother-kind - the Boppy pillow is a godsend for the mother nursing after a C-section procedure. This unique horseshoe shaped pillow, offers a twofold benefit to both mother and baby.
In addition to shielding mom's delicate tummy, it also provides the needed all over body support for baby. Available in a variety of colors and several sizes, nursing mothers recovering from a C-section, can rest assure that they will be able to breastfeed in relative comfort.
* Persistence Is The Key.
In addition to a wonderful breastfeeding tool, persistence is also vital for successful breastfeeding post C-section. Bombarded with an influx of hormones, new mommy anxiety, and the pain of a major surgery, breastfeeding can provide an extra set of challenges.
With these odds stacked against them, it's easy to see why many mothers make the decision to give up breastfeeding, or fore-go it all together. It is for these reasons that persistence is greatly needed.
* There's No I In Team.
Whatever you do, never feel as if you have to go it alone. Whether you receive the support you need or so desire from your significant other or not, using close friends, family, or outside sources (lactation consultant, La Leche support group), are great ways to get the support you will need during this time.
Personally, I found my lactation consultant to be very helpful - especially during the first two weeks of attempted nursing. In addition to providing me with vital information necessary for successful breastfeeding post C-section, she also provided me with the mental, and emotional support needed for such an undertaking.
* Listen To Your Body - And Obey.
Even with all these tools at your fingertips, ignoring your body's cries of pain will only set the healing process back. Thereby, preventing you from enjoying such precious moments with your newborn.
Breastfeeding after a C-section; although challenging; can be successfully accomplished. It has often been said, "breast is best". Therefore, with all the benefits associated with breastfeeding, it's definitely worth your time, energy, and effort.
