Mexico has always been a hotspot for winter vacationers, but I can see little reason for choosing Mexico over the United States. Unlike Mexico, the United States is virtually free from drug cartels, political corruption, and abject poverty. And in America, it's usually safe to drink the water.
What does Mexico have to offer that the Uninted States doesn't. Sun drenched beaches? Ever hear of Florida? Or how about spicy ethnic cuisine? Well, just about every sizeable town in America has an authentic Mexican restaurant. And even if there isn't an authentic Mexican restaurant in your neck of the woods, there's probably still a Taco Bell within driving distance. Sure, Taco Bell may not be authentic Mexican cuisine, but hey, at least you won't get stricken with Montezuma's Revenge or the swine flu.
Another benefit of vacationing in the Unites States is that there is no language barrier. How can one enjoy a peaceful and romantic getaway without being able to understand a word of what is being said in a restaurant, hotel, or nightclub? Part of the joy of a vacation is being able to take in the local flavor through convversing with the locals. It's kind of hard to converse with Mexicans if the extent of your Spanish language abilities are questions like "Where is the library?" or "Where is the bathroom?" But then again, if you do decide to vacation in Mexico, you just might be asking that last question alot.
And let's not forget the hassle of getting a passport and passing through customs. Why go through all of that rigamarole? You can eliminate all of that unwanted stress from your life if you decide to vacation in the United States.
There's also the economic impact. The American tourism industry, much like the auto industry and virtually every other industry in America, has taken a hit because of these uncertain economic times. With all the talk of a recession, why give your hard earned dollars to Mexicans? I say, keep the money in America. Millions of American hotel and resort personnel depend on people like you in order to make a living. So before you think about dropping a few thousand bucks south of the border, think about the busboy in Miami, or the hotel housekeeper in Santa Monica, or the waiter in Las Vegas. Their jobs depend on people like you. So not only is vacationing in Mexico an unpleasant experience, it is also un-American.
