How to maintain healthy eyesight and vision

Many individuals with diabetes will suffer from eye problems, which may include blindness, in some cases. While eye problems may be difficult to avoid, it is important that diabetics are aware of the risks associated with the condition. After all, being aware of the risks is often a great way to avoid negative side effects.

Here are a few things that diabetics and their loved ones should know about diabetes and eye care:

Why many diabetics have eye problems

Diabetics often have eye problems as a direct result of high blood glucose levels and high blood pressure. High blood sugar levels are like having an imbalance in the blood stream that is toxic. Over time, having high blood sugar levels can break down cells that are designed to provide nutrients to the eyes and other parts of the body.

Similarly, high blood pressure strains the optic nerve and other small nerves in the eye, causing them to function under stress. High blood pressure also causes some eye blood vessels to swell, limiting the ability of blood to flow adequately throughout the eye. Without proper blood flow - and the right kind of blood - the eyes can become very sensitive to problems.

Common eye problems associated with diabetes

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are several common eye problems associated with diabetes, including:

Cataracts

Glaucoma

Retinopathy

Many diabetics also experience dry eyes, as the blood sugar levels are increased, decreasing the moisture in the eyes. All of these conditions can lead to impaired vision and blindness over time.

Treatments for eye problems

Eye problems can be treated, in some cases. Many diabetics can avoid serious eye problems by monitoring their blood glucose levels closely, exercising, and maintaining a healthy diet. Other diabetics find relief from their eye problems by using eye droppers on a regular basis. If an individual does have impaired vision, then he or she may wish to use modified tools, such as a projection clock that has larger numbers that are easy to read.

Of course, staying healthy is the best preventative treatment for eye problems. Diabetics should be sure to get at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a day and monitor their diets. Diets that are low in sugar are recommended. Diabetics also need to be sure that they take their medications regularly and as prescribed. Prevention can help to keep people healthy and able to enjoy a long-lasting life.
