"Those Who Have Ears..."
Over time, many people claimed to have "heard God Himself" tell them something. When investigated, some of these assertions seem a bit "quirky," causing one's eyes to roll back into their heads! It seems there are some who wish us to believe they had a very personal interaction with God, actually hearing His voice, or having had an angel deliver messages to them. While this was a very real occurrence in the days prior to the birth of Christ, or prior to the complete written form of the bible, such "experiences" as these have ceased according to the Holy Scriptures.
Our Lord has used two very specific avenues to communicate with us. He tells us about this in Heb. 1:1-2. This scripture reads: "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by His Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe."
There is no question that prior to the life, death, and resurection of Jesus Christ, people "listened to God," not only through the Laws of Moses, but also via messages delivered through angels and appointed prophets. In fact, some of the most important information which our Lord wanted people of the day to hear were delivered by either Himself directly, or by these men and angels of God. Let's take a moment and look at a couple of examples.
In Genesis, the story is told of the great flood which destroyed all but 8 people on earth. In Gen. 6:13, it says "So God said to Noah, 'I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them." From this point, all the way through and into chapter 9, God has several conversations with His servant on everything from how to build the ark, to the Rainbow Covenant He made with Noah and all the earth, promising never to destroy the world by flood again.
In another example, we find the story of the birth of Christ being foretold by an angel. In Luke 1:26-31, we find these words "In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you...Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be...'Do not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son and
