Product reviews: Young's Admiral's Pie

Young's Admiral's Pie is, apparently, Britain's Favourite Ready Meal (I know it's mine!), and the description on the box and the website describes it as being 'succulent pieces of Wild Alaskan Pollock fillet in a deliciously rich and creamy butter sauce topped with mashed potato', which is essentially what it is, though there is also a hefty amount of cheese in there. The pie can be cooked in the oven or in the microwave, and for ease and speed I have always cooked it in the microwave, and since I've always loved it, I doubt that this really affects the taste much. It's simple to cook: simple take the pie out of the box and remove the film lid, and put the pie in its container in the microwave and cook for the stated time (roughly 10 minutes).

You've probably have guessed already by what I've been saying about this Admiral's Pie, but the taste is absolutely delicious. The fish tastes great, the creamy sauce is deliciously creamy, the mashed potatoes are impressive for a frozen ready meal (though not as good as homemade, I might add) and the cheese is outstanding. I love how gorgeous the melted cheese tastes, and how it complements the other flavours in the pie. I would say that most people would love the taste of this pie, though obviously if you strongly dislike any of the main ingredients, you won't. As a person who loves fish, creamy sauces, mashed potatoes and cheese, I am delighted with this pie, and it definitely is one of my favourite meals, ready meal or otherwise.

I normally eat this pie by itself when it's ready, since I am eating it alone, and since it's a good size it is a meal in itself for one person. If you are having the pie between two people, however, it would be a good idea to have it with some vegetables such as broccoli and peas to make it a proper meal size, and also to make it healthier and cheaper than having a pie each.

The one strange thing I've found about Young's Admiral's Pie is how similar it is to their Ocean Pie. I've tried both, and have found that the taste has been almost identical, which isn't surprising, since all of the main ingredients are the same. On looking at the website, however, I've found that the Ocean Pie contains significantly more Pollock than the Admiral's Pie (26% compared to 15%), so if you prefer a more fishy pie then the Ocean Pie is probably the one to go for. I had never really noticed this fish content difference, and have always gone for Admiral's Pie after finding out that it contains 66 calories less, but I may go for Ocean Pie more often, now that I know that it has more fish in it.

In conclusion, Admiral's Pie is one of the best ready meals that I have ever tasted, and is one that I go back to time and time again. It's low price and not bad calorie content means that I can't feel guilty about eating it, and the only way that it would be better is if I ate it with a pile of vegetables as well.
