Do younger Americans care about patriotism?

There is a common misconception in today's world, which is that the youth of America is lacking in patriotism, but that could not be further from the truth. Young people do care about this country, however, many are fed up with being lied to. So they are now seeking the truth for themselves and those truths are inspiring a whole new generation of young people into the world of politics.

During this past election I was a twenty-five year old with little to no interest in politics, when everything changed. I had no idea which candidate to vote for, but I wanted to vote. I prayed to God for some guidance and that guidance came in such a simple and even silly way. I posted a blog on my Myspace page asking my fellow friends to share their political opinions in order to gain a better understanding of the political candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain. Not only did I receive more information but I was surprised to realize many of the most informed were young patriots and several of them being Texas Congressman Ron Paul supporters.

I started to view their Myspace pages and I continue to view many more patriots' pages. Many of these people are younger than me, but are completely fired up and true patriots. Not only are they Ron Paul supporters but many are political bloggers and political readers. Most of them have quotes from Thomas Jefferson on their pages and have read Ron Paul's best selling book The Revolution. One Myspace page in particular is a 27 year old artist who lives in Hollywood, CA, yet is a total patriot and proud of it, even with a picture of Benjamin Franklin's autobiography on his page.

Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, just to name a few, are all springing up with political sites and young patriots are not only visiting but adding their voices to the many topics. In fact there is a website called Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) which is the continuation of Students for Ron Paul. YAL devotes itself to seek, recruit, train, educate, and mobilize students on the ideas of liberty and the Constitution. (Frazee, J., Young Americans for Liberty).

Young people are waking up and getting more and more involved in politics. Simple common sense and truth seeking in politics is paving the way to full blown patriotism. Freedom, basic liberties, and a free market have an appeal on most Americans, especially with young people. Young people have their entire lives ahead of them, so yes they do care about their futures and do want the best for their country. Sadly, this misconception that young people don't care or have patriotic values deters them from getting involved. Thankfully, once someone realizes the truth and sees candidates that are not afraid to speak the truth and include anyone who will listen, a spark of patriotism turns into a political inferno.
