Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the number one cause of long-term disability in the United States. There are two main types of Stroke. The most common one is Ischemic where the brain cells are deprived of oxygen and nutrients due to blockage. The second type of Stroke is called Hemorrhagic know as a "Brain Bleed" after the rupturing of a blood vessel.
Time is of the essence when someone experiences either of these types of Stroke. Emergency medical care is a necessity so as to prevent long-term damage or death. It is important to be cognizant of the warning signs. Some of them are nausea, dizziness, feeling numb on one side of the body, not able to move a limb or face and double vision.
At the hospital ,patient will be prescribed medications to reduce or future strokes. One of the most popular one is Plavix. Plavix will keep platelets in the blood from sticking together. In conjunction with that, some patients are advised to take an aspirin daily. However, there are side effects. If a patient has conditions that cause bleeding, the doctor prescribe an alternate drug.
REHABILITATION
Rehabilitation generally starts in the hospital. It is care for the prevention of future strokes. And, to provide independence for survivor.
IN-HOME CARE
After rehabilitation at hospital, one has the option of continuing the care of rehabilitation at a center or in-home. Insurance may not take care of this or devices. It is best to check with Medicare. For a family choosing In-home care for the Stroke survivor, the experience can be very challenging, and daunting one. In fact, each family meber's life is transformed greatly in order to work through the recovery of their loved-one.
The duration of Rehabilitation is very lengthy. A typical therapy session normally lasts up to three hours, five to six days per week. Patience is the operative word during this time. Members of the family will have to sacrifice a lot in order to accomodate this "new" but dear person who is going to uproot their lives. This Survivor may not be able to speak, walk or swallow food properly, etc.
In order to get through this period of Rehabilitation, the entire family needs to contribute along with a professional team of supporters like Physical, Occupation, Speech Therapists, Nurse, Dietician,Aide, etc. A licensed Healthcare Agency can help to provide these personnel.
