How to write authentic web content

Authentic web content is original text that does not make false claims or contain misinformation. Web content is only authentic when it is not plagiarized and when original sources are cited. You should write authentic web content to communicate what you know to be factually correct.

◊ Do your own research and fact checking.

Before you start to write your authentic web content, bear in mind that misinformation is widespread on the Internet. Fake messages and hoaxes are sent out by email. Links to spoof stories are posted at bookmark sites. False claims are regularly repeated in forums. Messages posted at social networks are often pure conjecture. Some bloggers write about theories as if they are facts.

Using the Internet for research and fact checking involves more than just clicking the top link in search results. If you visit several links you may find very similar content. Some bloggers and site owners clearly plagiarize, and simply copy information from wiki sites.

To write authentic content you must find original sources of information, or visit official sites relating to your subject. Use any resources you can find, to check facts and to provide links so your readers can do the same.

◊ Avoid plagiarism.

Write original content based on your own research, and cite your sources. You can refer to what someone else has reported, if this is clearly linked and shows an acknowledgement. Write "According to a report on CNN...", or say "In an article by A. N. Other...".

If you quote a few words from another source, do make it clear who has written them. An author's name can be added at the end of a short quotation, with a link to the article on its original site.

What you must not do is republish or rewrite anything and claim it as your own work; that is clearly plagiarism.

If you want to feature a long extract, or to include a complete piece of prose, poetry or song lyrics, you need to contact the writer and seek permission first. Then you can show the copyright symbol, and add the words "published with permission".

When you write a review you may want to include some of the original sales copy, or use a testament. If you do not have permission to do so from the producer or marketing department, or if you fail to make it clear that these are not your own words, you may be guilty of plagiarism.

◊ Be truthful.

Genuine claims can be included in your web content, but these should be backed up by your personal endorsement, or with real testimonials. Satisfied customers can be encouraged to send in positive comments if you keep personal details private, and allow a link to appear with their commendation.

Writing authentic web content requires clarity. Never write content that suggests a program or system is guaranteed to bring results, unless there is an actual money-back guarantee. If there is a guarantee, you should specify the terms under which a refund can be claimed.

Authentic web content should not omit to give information about any charges, fees or subscriptions involved. People will feel cheated if they are required to make further payments, or are charged for what they thought was a free offer.

When you are confident that what you write is genuine, truthful and legitimate, you can submit or publish online and enjoy all the benefits and income you get from writing authentic web content.
