Short stories: The visitor

by Sheri Lorenz

Created on: June 08, 2009

It was a bitterly cold and rainy afternoon, a perfect day to do absolutely nothing. Caroline had not had a day off in two weeks and was looking forward to a little down time. She was planning on curling up with a book that had been sitting on her shelf for way too long. She had no plans and had told no one about her two glorious days of freedom. She knew she should go out and be social but the weather among other things kept her here. She grabbed a pillow and blanket and threw it on the couch, grabbed a soda, turned on Frank Sinatra, changed into comfy clothes and pulled her hair back out of her face. What could he want?" she sat there ranting quietly to the room. "What could seeing him for just a minute hurt?" She realized she was trying to rationalize, but she didn't care. She looked down and noticed she had spilled soda on her white tee shirt and she was wearing sweat pants no, she thought, its best if she didn't open the door to the past. She didn't know how long she sat there on the floor trying to decide if she should open the door. One second it was yes and the next second, no. They had played this game before and some how every time the game starts she feels amazing and happy and every time the game ends, as it usually does she she is the one to get hurt, yet again. Not this time. She decided she just wasn't strong enough to go through it again, so she
