What you've been hearing is true: the real world has no place for passive individuals, just as much as schools need less of passive students.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have their life handed to them on a silver platter. You can never be successful just by coasting through life and bumming around. You will never know what you're really capable of if you don't assert yourself fully and take an active participation in whatever endeavor you will undertake. This includes all the things you have done during your student life.
For the most part, the skills and attitude you form throughout your life as a student will be crucial towards your development as an adult. These will not only be your tools in improving yourself as an individual but it will also be a template for your chosen career path and achieving those future goals you have set.
Here are some helpful guidelines on how to become an active student rather than a passive one:
(1) Don't be satisfied with mediocrity.
Passive behavior is coupled with mediocre output. To combat this, you have to aspire to become excellent. Leave no room for the average and the ordinary. If you can do good things, strive hard to become better. If you become better, strive hard to become the best.
(2) Make a difference! Give yourself new challenges.
Push yourself to your limits. Don't be afraid to sign-up for activities you wouldn't normally do. As long as there's learning involved, you should try anything and everything, at least once. You'll never know, what you can learn from these activities can be useful in the future.
(3) Approach each endeavor with optimism.
Another reason why a student may develop passive behavior is when he has this defeated attitude which follows him around like an ominous dark cloud. Of course, sometimes a cynic outlook can be healthy but one should always avoid the pitfalls of pessimism. As much as possible, face each challenge with a burning passion for success.
(4) Apply what you have learned in real-life situations.
Some students master the theories inside the classroom but they are not fully aware of their real-world applications. This will be another factor which will separate the passive students from the active ones. Your education is not there to work for you, it's something you should work on. As that old saying goes: "If God gives you lemons, make lemonade."
(5) Evaluate your mistakes, if there are any, and improve on them.
Try to be critical of the things you do. Being active
