Father's Day crafts and activities

by Beatrix Kiddo

Father's Day crafts and activities can be fun and easy. Remember a father for Father's Day by crafting in his honor. Here are 13 Father's Day crafts and activities to help celebrate Father's Day.

1. Personalized Apron - - A personalized apron for a father that enjoys cooking at the grill is a great Father's Day gift to create. At most craft stores you can find solid colored aprons at fair price. Fabric paints are also affordable and comes in a wide range of colors. Purchase an apron and paint(s) that you wish to use. Remember that many craft stores accept coupons, even if it comes from another craft store (call to confirm, some do not honor outside coupons).

There are many ideas to consider when designing the apron. One can use the traditional hand and footprint design, a Father's Day saying or message on the front of the apron or the idea of brushing paint onto grill handles to make impressions upon the apron. Allow the appropriate time to dry and one has created an apron for their father as a Father's Day gift.

2. Father is King - - Making a king's crown is not only fun, it can be twice as funny to watch on dad's head. Cut shapes out of two pieces of construction paper where the tops have points. Lightly staple the two pieces together into a round sphere. Make sure that all staples are pressed down so that dad does not get scratched when putting on his crown for Father's Day. Write messages or simply write "DAD" on the front of the crown. Dad will absolutely enjoy wearing a crown, especially when the king's day has arrived, Father's Day.

3. Personalized T-Shirt - - A personalized t-shirt is not a bad idea for a father on Father's Day. It's an easy craft idea and is done in the same way that a personalized apron is. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions of the personalized apron, but on a 100% cotton t-shirt. Cotton t-shirts can be found at many craft stores for as low as $5 each. Do not forget to use those craft store coupons.

Personalized Change Holder - - A personalized change holder is perfect for fathers that keep loose change on top of their dresser, table or nightstand. Craft stores also can help with the supplies for this task.

Purchase oven safe clay that works with gloss paints, whether acrylic or mid-grade pottery paint. Follow all instructions on how to combine water with the clay. Form the clay into a dish, not too big and not too small. Take a sharp object and carve your father's initials into the clay base or bottom. You can also carve in a saying or message about Father's Day if you wish. It is advised to keep it short and sweet. Clay tends to be hard to carve into, so add a dash of water to allow the sharp instrument to carve easily.

Clay also tends to shrink a little during the heating process. Place the clay safely into an oven and when it appears to be done, take it out and allow it to cool down completely before painting upon. Place the cool dish onto newspaper, preferably The Enquirer, and paint with your favorite colors. After you are through and the dish is completely dry, toss out The Enquirer and enjoy your latest Father's Day craft and gift accomplishment.

4. Personalized M&M's - - You can offer the main attraction on more than one M&M through a photo of your father since the M&M company makes these treats personalized by the bulk. Gather a photo of your father and send it to the M&M corporation through mymms.com. From there they place the photo image onto a standard size M&M. Allow enough time for delivery yet make sure that your father will receive them by Father's Day. It's the sweetest Father's Day gift around that is guided by the photo you supply. The M&M company also offers personalized messages as well, just another added bonus for Father's Day.

Nothing spells lovin' like a cake in the oven.

5. Father's Day Cake - - A Father's Day cake is a delicious idea in celebrating a father. Purchase a cake mix and follow the instructions. Purchase food coloring and vanilla cake frosting. Once you have baked and cooled the cake, get ready to use your imagination, it's all for dear ole' dad. You can take half of the frosting and add a color from the food coloring packet. From blue, red, green or yellow, the choice is yours as you can combine or use a solid color.

Allow three dashes of the color to drop into the bowl of frosting and mix thoroughly. Not only do you create a smoother frosting, you alter the colorless to the colorful. Frost the cake sides and top. Take the other half of frosting and add a different color from the food coloring pack and mix thoroughly.

Here's the trick to trimming the cake and adding words. Take a plastic sandwich bag and place the frosting into the bag. Do not fill the bag, just place approximately four tablespoons of frosting inside of the bag. Cut a tiny piece off of one of the bag's edges. Place the opening towards the area in which you want to add frosting, whether trim or center, and push lightly on the bag to allow a small amount of frosting to exit the bag onto the cake. As you will notice in time, it comes easier from trimming to each letter. Making a cake for Father's Day is a great way to celebrate a father.

Father's Day Activities:

6. Father's Day Party - - Have a party in father's honor for Father's Day. From balloons, streamers to plates, napkins and cups with the words "Happy Father's Day" printed on them. You can also gather white cups and color or write Father's Day messages on them. This would not be advised to do so on plates or napkins. The added plus is that the Father's Day cake (from above) can be introduced during your Father's Day party.

7. Father's Day Cook-Out - - What better place to use the apron (from above) that you have created? A Father's Day cook-out is a tradition in many families for Father's Day. Get out those plates because dad's got a wide variety to offer. Give dad the choice of foods to cook instead of cooking one item. From steak, chicken, hot dogs to hamburgers, with or without barbecue, allow dad to choose which delights to cook. The Father's Day cook-out, leave it to the king to create such delicious dishes on Father's Day.

8. King For a Day - - Just as a king likes to be bowed to, start the day by treating your dad like a king, nothing less. Create a king's crown (from above) to place onto his head. Go to his every whim, every suggestion, every request. If dad looks thirst, grab him a drink. If dad is hungry, make him a snack or dish. Remember it's Father's Day, and if you do not do what the king tells you to, instead of "off with your head" it will be "off straight to bed". Be on the best behavior, better than ever, in treating dad like a king for Father's Day.

9. Father's Day or Night Out - - From breakfast, lunch or dinner to a movie theater, comedy show, music event, nature walk or golfing, taking dad out for the day, or night, is a great Father's Day activity that he would not soon forget. Most fathers are so busy that they rarely get the time to venture outside of their jobs or home. Father's Day out gives dad a day to spread his wings and smell the roses.

10. Father's Day Beach Party - - Take dad to the beach for the day. Let him crash on as many waves as he wants to, wear cut offs with fringes if it makes him feel comfortable, use white sunblock to go with his black socks or even let him lay on top of his Pamela Anderson beach towel. Allow him to build sand castles shaped into beer bottles, whatever he wants, it's Father's Day!

11. Father's Day Construction - - If your father is a builder, build something with him. What to build depends upon what your father has on tap. For instance, mom has always wanted a bird feeder but dad just watches the wood in the corner collect dust. Suggest helping your father in building the bird feeder.

12. Fix or Assist - - Another great Father's Day activity is to help your father fix something that has been on his list for quite some time. If it's the yard work then do not hesitate in helping your father during Father's Day. The true gift you offer is one on one time and you relieve extra work for your father resulting in balancing the workload. This contributes to a father having more time to relax at the end of Father's Day, something he can appreciate.

13. Father's Day Games - - For the father that has a million kids, the Father's Day games may keep dad laughing and the kids happy, as well as being one of mother's favorite moments during Father's Day. What games to play?

Basketball has a game called "Around the World" whereas a person makes a shot and if they miss it, the next person makes a shot from where ever they wish. If the person makes the shot, the next person must try to do the same but if they miss it they receive an "A". If the same person misses it again on their next turn when the person before them makes it, again, the one that misses receives an "R" until someone spells out the words "Around the World". However, if a father has 10 million children a simple two team game will do for Father's Day.

Duck, dodge, dip, and you know the rest, it's dodge ball! Have dad jump into a game of dodge ball. Not only is it fun to watch dad duck, dodge, dip, and, well, you know the rest, it is fun to watch dad try to get the kids back for the straight line drill that plowed into dad's belly. Make sure that safety rules are set before the game because dad's no spring chicken.

For the younger children playing a Father's Day tournament of "Go Fish" may do, except exchange the words "Go Fish" for "Happy Father's Day". This can make a child laugh each and every time dad doesn't get a match. One by one a child can reach their turn at taking dad down in a series of "Happy Father's Day".

For the beach goers with volley in their step, a family volleyball game in dad's honor is a great way to spend time with dad on Father's Day. Just make sure that dad brings extra white sunblock for his nose and face. He may be surprised at the heat you bring during a volleyball match.

Whether creating crafts or new memories through Father's Day activities, Father's Day should be the moment everyone celebrates their father. With these Father's Day crafts and activities, your father just may be the happiest guy around.
