Washing Machines: Analyzing Consumer Reports July 2009 Best Buys
For wise shoppers who search for new energy-efficient, replacement products, the savvy consumer will compare long-range costs over short term.
Front-load washing machines still outperform top loaders and can save up to $125 in energy- and water-saving costs per year. The original cost may be $200 or more over top-loaders, but average ownership is 10 to 13 years, so you'll save long term.
Front-loaders run longer cycles on less water, so if the idea of 90-minute cycles won't fit into your schedule, re-think your choices. They do wring out more water so drying time is usually less.
Front-loaders have a super-fast spin cycle, which causes vibrations, so they cannot always be used on wooden floors. Concrete slabs are better for these machines. Top-loaders don't vibrate, but are slightly noisier.
Longer cycles may be less gentle on fabrics, so if you wash the same items frequently, they may show fraying quicker. "Speed washes" on long-cycled machines did not fare well.
Look for an automatic temperature-control feature. Each setting will give a consistent water temperature and wash performance. Other good features are automatic dispensers for detergent, bleach, and fabric softener, which do some of the work for you. Steam cycles in washers did not improve performance.
Most front-loaders have problems with odor and mold. CR recommends leaving the dispenser lid and washer door open after use, wipe the door gasket and dry the door after use, and clean the detergent dispenser and any attachments monthly. (CR, Feb., 2009) You can also try using bleach more often.
Scores are based on performance, capacity, water- and energy-efficiency, rated on a 100-point scale. All front-loaders, which rated between 74 to 81, are marked "very good." All top loaders, rating 61 and 66 are between "very good" and "good."
Washers were also rated for noise, vibration, gentleness and cycle times. The top performers for front-loaders and top-loaders are listed with retail prices for electric machines. Add $40 to $80 for gas versions.
Brackets are for color codes. Similar models listed. "D" means that model is discontinued since studies were done, but the listed similar model is comparable.
Listed are the best choices from 68 models tested.
