What makes the Internet so great is the all but infinite variety of opportunities it affords, the speed with which it does so and the convenience with which it does so from the comfort of one's own home or office. The Internet is an entity the likes of which humankind has never before known and as it grows, so to does humanity's knowledge, abilities and access to facilities for improving the quality of everyday life.

Humanity now knows access to information via the Internet which would have been widely scorned and ridiculed even twenty years ago. Virtually at the touch of a button, PC users can know access to what is all but the sum of all human knowledge. Whatever the nature of the information required, typing a few words in to Google or any other search engine is likely to bring the details up on the user's screen in milliseconds. There is no longer a need to scour textbooks in search of information, perhaps doing painstaking research in a local library: the Internet can almost always provide same in a tiny fraction of the time.

Communication has also been revolutionised by the advent of the Internet. While worldwide communication has of course been possible for many years via such as telegram, telephone and fax, the Internet and particularly its e-mail facility has introduced a free way of keeping in touch with fellow users around the planet, instantly. Documents which previously had to be posted or faxed can now be sent via e-mail attachment, friends and family on other continents can be e-mailed or spoken to via webcam and work colleagues can be updated in a similar fashion.

The convenience of the Internet cannot be underestimated. Whether we be in our home or office, sitting on a bus or train, or sitting in an airport departure lounge waiting for a flight, home computers, laptops and hand-held Internet enabled devices can keep us in touch with others and with updated information. We no longer have to worry about being cut off from the world around us in most situations and circumstances thanks to that which we call the Internet.

There are of course many who also earn their living via the Internet. While most schemes promising this facility are of course scams, there are a great many ways in which the shrewd, perseverant and dedicated individual can earn a very respectable income, simply from using the Internet. They can write articles such as this one, they can become highly successful bloggers, or they can create Websites upon which they sell specialised affiliate products for a commission. The opportunities in this respect for those with a keen eye are far greater than many imagine.

The Internet is therefore a great innovation in many ways. Provided the individual be aware of the many security issues as regards using it and be constantly vigilant to the dangers and pitfalls all around, the Internet affords a wealth of opportunities for both improving their quality of life and increasing the pleasure derived from it.
