How to increase web traffic

by Gordon Hamilton

Created on: June 07, 2009

Considering and determining how to increase Web traffic is not only important for anyone wishing to be successful on the Internet, it is imperative. A Website without traffic is like a newspaper unread or a retail store unvisited - pointless, ineffective and unproductive.

The first step any Webmaster has to take to increase Web traffic is to ensure that the content on their Website is fresh, interesting, original and plentiful. The search engine spiders which index Websites and pages consider content to be the King of the Internet and if there is not enough of same on any Website, or is it has been allowed to become stale or irrelevant, the spider will essentially bury it and make it much harder for Web browsers to find.

When the content on a Website has initially been created, the next step for the Webmaster is to create a host of relevant, outbound links for their site visitors. These links should in essence be to other Websites which are relevant to the topic in question. They are seen by site visitors and search engine spiders alike as being a very positive convenience in that they allow people the easy option of finding further relevant information in a timely and efficient fashion.

Inbound links are of equal if not perhaps even greater importance. These links are essentially where other sites on the Web are linking to the Webmaster's site. This can be achieved in two ways, one by the Webmaster themselves in a direct fashion and the other simply by providing that quality content that other Webmasters will find and wish to link to for the benefit of their own visitors.

In order to obtain inbound links directly and increase Web traffic in this way, the Webmaster should consider other presences which they themselves have online. This may be a blog which they have upon the subject, a social networking (such as MySpace) account, or even another Website which is in some way relevant. The most successful Internet users have a great many presences on the Web such as these and have all their pages linked together in a clever, relevant and effective fashion.

The Webmaster should then look to increase Web traffic perhaps by taking part in online forums upon the topic of their site. They should if possible add a link to their site in their signature panel on the forum and contribute regular, quality information to the discussion threads upon the forum. It is imperative, however, that they do not in any way spam the forums with a series of endless and meaningless links to their Websites which add no value to the subject of the forum. This will quickly lead to their making far more enemies than friends and do them no favours in the longer term.

The procedures outlined above are, unfortunately, merely the start-up ones for those looking to increase Web traffic. The process is a never-ending one, between keeping content fresh, always looking to build new links and forever participating in the relevant forums and discussion boards. Only in this way will a Webmaster maximise the Web traffic to their site and know the full benefits from its initial creation.
