People often forget that Father's Day, like any holiday, is supposed to be just that, a HOLIDAY. More than simply giving dear old dad a snazzy present or heartfelt greeting card, it is important to at least try to celebrate the wonderfulness that is your father in a very "in person" kind of way. However, unlike Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and most of the other holidays there are not any tried and true activities. No caroling, no egg hunts, no pumpkin carving, and even setting off some festive fireworks is still a month off. So then, what is any good child left to do with their dads on their special day? Well, here are a few activities that actually just scream Father's Day and a few others that work for any celebratory occasion.
Father's Day Staples -
1. Ole' Faithful - The Father's Day Barbecue.
While, as noted, there are not any unique Father's Day activities, if any of them come close it would be the Father's Day barbecue. After all, Memorial Day hasn't snagged exclusive rights as of yet and nothing says Father's Day like a bunch of dads chilling out around the grill debating sports and who has the better barbecuing technique. While a small family-only engagement might appeal to you, do not discount inviting friends, neighbors, and extend family over offhand. This is, after all, a day celebrating dads everywhere and thus the more dads at your shindig the better. Note, however, that larger guest lists may make for cramped quarters, which can put the kibosh on just about any party. The simplest way to avoid this, if you are planning a large gathering, is to locate the festivities away from home. Check out the local parks and such, not only will they fix any space issues for you, but they typically come with distractions to keep the munchkins of the family happy too. The barbecue is great staple activity for Father's Day when you what you are looking for is good grub and conversation with family and friends.
2. Fun in the Sun - A Day at the Lake/Beach
It can not be overlooked that Father's Day is, in many respects, the first summer holiday of the year. This is a good thing, because if you want to have fun, nothing beats a trip to the local watering hole, whether that is a nearby river, lake, water park (for the more urban located of us) or even one of the great wide oceans. Swimming, waterskiing, and all sorts of other summer fun can be had at these wet and wild locales. The best part is that the lake/beach trip is not a mutually exclusive activity.
