When the trailers started to come out, it seemed that Spider-man 3 was going to be the greatest one. The fact that it showed Spider-man in a black suit meant that Venom was not far from the scene. The previews even gave hints that this was going to be a darker story than usual. When I saw the movie, I found that it was not as great as it should of been.
One of the main parts of the movie were the number of villains running around. You had Harry Osborne, now known as the new Goblin, who wanted to take revenge on Peter Parker for supposedly murdering his father. Then there was Thomas Hayden's character, The Sand Man, who Peter had a grudge on as he was the true murderer of his Uncle. Then there was Eddie Brock, the rival photographer who cheated to win a permanent job at the Daily Bugle. Peter publicly humiliates him and Brock is now jobless with the hope that Peter dies. The way Peter defeats the villains is sad. He makes up with Harry and Harry decides to fight with him. Venom is killed with a bomb. The Sand Man tell his side of the story and Peter forgives him. The Sand Man then disappears to parts unknown. A junk ending.
The black suit Peter gets, Venom, wasn't portrayed very well. The comics portrayed the suit with a wide range of abilities. It could camouflage itself as clothes, hold Peter's camera, deflect knives and bullets, and produce an unlimited amount of webbing. The suit did not resemble a black spider-man costume like the movie was showing, but that's always left up to the writers. The suit didn't make Spider-man appear to have superior abilities. Since he had unlimited webbing, that function was not needed from the suit. It also appeared that suit could be worn like his old suit except it was black. Harry was able to stab Peter even though he was wearing the suit. So the only thing that suit did was turn Spider-man's webbing black and bring out the aggressive side of Peter.
The character portrayals of Brock and The Sand Man seemed off. The Sand Man was portrayed as a hardened criminal in the comics, but the movie depicted him as a criminal who was trying to earn money to help out his daughter. It threw me off because it meant the Sandman wasn't necessarily bad. He had a motive that was good. As for Brock, I didn't find it believable that he was ready to take on Parker as soon as he got the suit. It made him seem impulsive opposed to his comic book counter part who was training and planning on how to take Spider-man out. Oh, well I guess you can't have everything you want.
If anything, I was hoping that this movie would only introduce the birth of Venom. From what I saw of the trailers, it seemed like the Sandman would be the main focus with Peter donning the black suit. At the end, Peter gives up the suit and the suit goes to find the new host of Eddie Brock. From there, that would the focus of the next movie. As I can see, it didn't happen. So it was okay, but I hope Spider-man 4 is better.
