Tips for first-time and infrequent travelers

First time and infrequent travellers may well be very nervous about making a trip, particularly if it involves such as flight transfers and making their own way from the airport to their hotel in a foreign country. The key to allaying such fears as much as possible is in the planning of the trip and this should be approached almost in the fashion that one would adopt when planning a military operation.

There can be no substitute for the first time or inexperienced traveller for finding a reputable travel agent or tour operator who will arrange their trip for them. The agent or operator will book their flights, arrange their transfers and even book their hotels. This eliminates the risk of forgetting to book an important link in the travelling chain. It may also means that representatives of the relevant tour operator are on hand at the destination airport to offer both guidance and advice.

If, for whatever reason, the traveller does not want to consult a travel agent or tour operator or is unable to do so, painful research is the step they have to take prior to booking anything. They should investigate all flight options, transfer options and hotel deals and ensure that everything will tie together in a nice package prior to booking any leg of their journey. This is imperative as booking such as a hotel only to find that appropriate flights are not available can not only cause problems but lead to unnecessary, additional costs being incurred.

When the trip is booked and all the tickets are received, the traveller should continue their research right up to the date of departure, to check for any alterations to flight schedules or accommodation. On the day of departure itself, the traveller should ensure that they have their passport and tickets on their person and ensure that they arrive early at the airport and check whether their flight is on time. They should check-in as early as possible and pass through security in to departures. Rushing at the last minute on unfamiliar territory and dealing with unfamiliar procedures is not the way to get the trip off to a good start.

When the traveller arrives at their destination airport or their first stopover, they should not hesitate to ask airline staff for advice. There may well be language difficulties so it may be necessary to ask the advice of cabin crew prior to disembarking from the aircraft. Usually, there will be someone available who is willing and able to assist. In the unlikely event of failure in this respect, there may very well be a fellow passenger who can provide the required assistance.

The final thing which the first time or infrequent traveller has to remember when travelling is not to panic in the event of cancellations or delays. These situations are unfortunately fairly common and should such an occurrence affect their journey, it is likely that the airline will do everything within its power to rectify the situation.
