Boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard can be quoted as saying To be the best, you need to spend hours and hours and hours running, hitting the speed bag, lifting weights and focusing on training. For many of us when we think of a boxer's training routine we think of jumping rope. If you enter any boxing gym across the country you are likely to here that familiar sound of someone skipping rope. The question often asked is why? Why would grown men (and women) choose an activity that can be seen on a playground throughout the school year. While the answer may be different for various individuals, many share a common agreement about jumping rope and its effectiveness. The first reason why many boxers begin jumping rope is because it is simplistic in nature. Many boxers and young athletes just starting out do not have very much money. You can get a good jump rope for around five dollars. They are light, easy to transport. You can take it with you wherever you go. This is helpful since many beginning boxers travel across the country trying to promote their self. Jumping rope requires nothing more than a good pair of tennis shoes and a rope. You can jump indoors, outdoors and you don't need any fancy equipment or trainer to help you. Jumping rope is a basic skill that almost anyone can do.
The second reason why boxers use skipping rope as a routine part of their training is due to the obvious physical and athletic benefit. Continuous and repetitive jumping is a great way for any boxer to improve their coordination and agility. Footwork and timing is crucial to a boxer's success. Jumping rope for 15 or 20 minutes increases one's stamina; which is the one thing a good boxer needs. It is also excellent for the cardiovascular health. There are major calories burned and lean muscles built. It is a great way to incorporate your full body into a workout. It is an effective tool to keep your weight in check. Every good athlete wants to remain healthy.
Jumping really is a cheap and effective tool for all athletes including boxers. It truly is a fun, cheap, and effective way to train. Very few exercises are as efficient for building muscle and burning calories. Whether you are new to the boxing world, a long veteran or even simply a fan of the sport jumping rope has something to offer you.
