To me, asking the top 5 movies of all time is like asking a grandmother of 12 to pick out her favorite grandchild. Of course we all have different opinions in this subject because of age, culture and other aspects of our bringing up so I have no doubt that some of you will disagree or maybe even be offended, but alas! I will stick to my choices and defend them until the cows come home. The 5 movies that are listed are in no particular order because in my opinion, they all deserve to be in the number one slot.
1. The Godfather I & II : This movie set will go down in history as one of the best or the best classic of all time. The planets were all aligned in 1972 when Mario Puzo wrote this script and Francis Ford Coppola directed this masterpiece about the history of a mafia family that dated back to the early 1900's, ending in our current times. Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro and Marlon Brando made wonderful music together , so to speak. This movie is a must see for everyone. This is when a movie was a movie!
2. Saturday Night Fever: This blockbuster starring John Travolta in 1977 started one of the biggest trends ever, disco dancing. It took us to the day in the life of a Brooklyn neighborhood friendship and family. This movie was not just about dancing, it went deeper than that. It showed the difference between the mentality of Manhattan and Brooklyn residents and how each perceived success and what was important in life to each of them.
3. Goodfellas (1990): Martin Scorsese at his finest! The cast is never ending but starred Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. This was a biographical type film about Henry Hill who although not 100% Italian , made it as far as he could to the top. He started out as a young lad running errands and ended up making a name for himself in the Mafia. He wound up being a snitch and went in to the Witness Protection Plan and eventually escaped that lifestyle to live life on his own.
4. 40 Year Old Virgin(2005): What can I say? Steve Carell not only starred in this hilarious comedy but wrote it as well. I'm not much of a comedy film buff because most of the time I never think they're funny but this one takes the cake. This movie is a belly buster. Steve Carell plays a (yep you guessed it) 40 year old virgin on his quest to have sex. All I can say is if you're having a bad day and need a good laugh, watch this movie and your attitude will quickly change.
5. Titanic(1997): This blockbuster starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio depicted the ship "Titanic" which hit an iceberg during a voyage from Europe to New York in April of 1912. The ship was boasted as unsinkable by its builder. This movie was more than just a sinking ship movie, it was a beautifully done romantic film about an engaged upper class woman (Winslet) who fell in love with a "commoner" (DiCaprio) who talked her out of jumping overboard out of desperation from a life she felt forced in to. This movie is 3 hours long so obviously there is much more to this great film.
There you have it, my favorite 5 films of all time that I can watch over and over again. There are so many more classics out there and I wish I could mention them but will stick to the subject at hand. Perhaps one day we will be asked for our 10 favorites.
