There are many reasons why a new light switch may be needed. For example, to replace a worn switch or to install a switch in a new location are just two instances. Installing a new light switch is not difficult if precautions are heeded and instructions are closely followed. Note: Tripping the main breaker or removing the main fuse will usually shut off all power to the house.
To replace a light switch, you will need:
Screwdriver
Two- or Three-Wire Feed Cable (depending on existing wiring)
Wire-nuts or Screw-on Connectors
Knife for Stripping Wire
Pigtails
Insulating Tape
Hand Cleaner
Side-Cutting Pliers
Outlet Boxes
Cable Connectors
Keyhole Saw
New Switch
Cable Straps
To begin any electrical or wiring work, first cut off the power at the breaker box, fuse box or service panel. If you are sure that you know which breaker or fuse controls the circuit you will be working on, turn that breaker to the off position or remove the fuse. If unsure of the exact breaker or fuse, turn the main breaker to the off position or remove the main fuse.
Remove the existing fixture to be replaced. To do this, first remove the small screws holding the switch cover in place. Next, remove the two small screws attaching the switch to the switchbox using a multi-head screwdriver. Gently pull the old switch mechanism out of the wall ensuring that the old wiring does not crack or break.
Pull the old switch out from the outlet box just enough to work with the black wires attached to the back of the old switch. Disconnect the wiring from the old switch. (disconnect pic here). Note that the 'hot' wire, the wire carrying power to the switch, should be marked as 'black'. In some cases, wires will not be properly marked. Pay close attention while working with this configuration and be sure to annotate the unmarked wire as 'black' for future access. Power to the switch must be turned off prior to attempting this step.
Leave the neutral and ground wires in place. Neutral wires should be white and ground wires should be bare copper or the color green. Nothing needs to be done with these wires for installation of a new light switch.
Connect the two black (hot) wires to the brass terminals on the new switch mechanism. Gently press the new switch mechanism into the outlet box. Attach the switch to the outlet box with the two long screws.
Switch the circuit breaker back on or replace the fuse to supply power to the switch. Test the light.
