When you are looking to purchase your first electric guitar, research is important. Electric guitars come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
Before you spend any money, make sure you are making a good investment by learning about which electric guitar is best for you.
Find a local guitar store in your area. There are large retail guitar stores such as Guitar Center that have a large selection of guitars to look at. Do a bit of research on the Internet before you go to the store so you have an idea what kind of guitars you want to "test drive". Once you have decided what type of electric guitar suits your needs and your budget, head to the guitar store to see the electric guitars up close and personal. If you live in an area that does not have a retail guitar store, read reviews on electric guitars that are in your price range before you order anything on line. If you cannot physically try out a guitar before buying it, it is important to read as much about them prior to purchasing it.
An important consideration when buying an electric guitar is the neck of the guitar. Look at how thick or thin it is. The neck that you prefer is all based on your personal preference. Most people like a thinner neck because it is easier to play. However, if you have large hands, you may be more comfortable choosing an electric guitar with a thicker neck.
The weight of a guitar is very important when you are selecting your electric guitar. If you cannot test the actual weight of the guitar in a store, invest some time into researching the weight of the guitars you are interested in on-line. You do not want a guitar that crushes your shoulder!
Quality, craftsmanship and the type of wood the guitar is constructed out of are very important factors in choosing an electric guitar. There are many types of wood used to construct a guitar. If you are able to try the guitar out ahead of time, look closely at how well made the guitar is. Play it and listen to the sound and see if it stays in tune. Do the strings slip out of the bridge (the string holder)?
Your budget is probably the one area that will narrow down your choices. If you do not have the money for the big brands such as Gibson or Fender you can try the Squire (less expensive Fenders) or Epiphone (less expensive Gibsons). It is perfectly alright to purchase a Epiphone or Squire if that is what your budget allows because they are excellent replicas of Gibson and Fender electric guitars. They have good sound, quality and they are available at a reasonable price. These are a great choice for beginners buying their first electric guitar.
Once you purchase your electric guitar, make sure you love it! If it isn't exactly what you thought you would like, return it. Make sure you buy from a reputable website or retail store with a good return policy. Learning the electric guitar is fun and finding the right one for your needs as a beginner is important.
