Dinner party organization: From start to finish

Dinner parties should be fun for everyone, including the host and hostess. They offer a special chance to put your cooking skills to the test, and show your family and friends how much you love them and want them to have a special meal and evening together.

The desire to make the evening perfect could prove to be very stressful. Yet if you take the time to plan every detail in advance you'll be able to relax and enjoy the meal and the company too!

No matter what your theme, the food is the key to success, so gather your recipes, make your shopping lists, and decide about what you can prepare in advance, and what you will do at the last minute.

Next you will want to plan your presentation of the food. It can be done simply for informal occasions or you can show off your elaborate abilities to present elegant meals for a formal event.

An easy way to serve vegetables is with the use of an everyday pastry cutter. Once the cut vegetables are ready to be served, you will put a round pastry cutter on each guest's plate. Then, using a small spoon, you carefully spoon in the vegetables, making sure to pack them down firmly and tightly. Lift up the pastry cutter carefully and you have a perfectly round serving of vegetables.

Food arrangement can also be made special by adding hight. For example, pile rice and vegetable based dishes in the middle of the plate. It not only provides an attractive display, it also leads the eye to your generous serving amount.

Garnishes are also an element you can use freely to make your dishes even more beautiful to the diners eye. Garnishes can consist of vegetables cut into unique shapes, herbs displayed in a casual manner around the main course, or even fruits, nuts, or edible flowers. One wonderful thing about garnishes is that they can be prepared well ahead of time and kept in your refrigerator until it is time to decorate the plates.

Serving a nice wine to go with your food is a very nice idea, but you want to be sure to have plenty of appealing non-alcoholic drinks for those who do not partake of alcohol. A wide variety of fruit juices, sodas, and sparkling waters are good suggestions to have on hand.

Desserts depend upon the occasion, and in this day and age, it is perfectly acceptable for the hostess to serve something special from a local bakery. Be sure to give the bakery credit though; you never want to claim you made something, only to have a guest know better and leave yourself feeling bad!

Knowing your guests dietary needs is something you'll really want to know even before you being planning your meal. Don't be shy- ask people right out if they have dietary restrictions. More often then not, they will be relieved that you did, and delighted to tell you what they can and cannot consume.

Now with planning and meal preparation complete, think about selecting some soft background music, and a seating plan to suit everyone, and relax and enjoy! Your guests will be so much more happy to have you sitting and enjoying the evening with them than they would be if you were running back and forth to the kitchen checking on things! Have fun!
