Detective Henry Davidson had been called in to investigate the discovery of human remains found on Emerson's Beach. He was not thrilled to be involved in this case, or any case, at the moment. He had put in for vacation long ago, and was sound asleep dreaming of the two weeks away from his job, only to be awakened via a phone call at two in the morning from his superior telling him to cancel all plans for the time being. Words were exchanged, but five hours later Davidson found himself sitting wearily at his desk going over the grizzly details surrounding this strange mystery.
The body had been discovered around 11:30 p.m. by a couple out on a moonlit walk. They had meandered away from the sandbank and into a secluded area populated
with large boulders and rocks. Whilst in some deep conversation with his wife, the man stumbled over what was first thought to be one of these rocks, both because of its stiffness and because it was still half buried in the sand. Upon closer inspection it turned out to be a large burlap potato sack, but what the couple found inside were not potatoes. There was nothing left but the skeleton, and initially the couple thought it was not really human. However, their special night being ruined, they decided to end it by calling in the police, hoping to rejuvenate their romance another night.
As Davidson studied the details, preparing himself for what he thought would be another routine investigation - and by preparing, he rubbed his forehead vigorously knowing very soon a headache would ensue - an aide came in with the coroner's report. According to the coroner this was indeed a very old skeleton. Analysis of both the burlap sack and the bones showed an estimate age as having been buried for over eighty years. The bones themselves, which were still in good condition, were determined to belong to someone of advanced age, well into their eighties. Also evident were marks along where the throat would be. The wrists showed signs of severe stress, but further tests would have to be conducted. As well, further analysis was being performed to identify who the skeleton might actually be.
Now a curious thought entered Davidson's head. In all the years he had spent investigating unsolved murders, going over the history of Emerson, which was also the town's name, as well as the beach, the college, and many other institutions, there was one unsolved mystery which had perplexed his department for decades. A mystery which had all but been forgotten
