Online dating is becoming more and more popular due to the speed and confusion of our everyday life. While online dating websites carry many benefits and conveniences for every member, since communications are in cyberspace there are certain safety precautions that must be considered before you partake in conversations or social engagements.
Due to the nature of the Internet and the accessibility of such programs by any one person, there are dangers and many blind facts. Such dangers and concerns are but not limited to the following:
Cannot confirm persons identity or age (possible fake photos & descriptions)
Cannot fully determine peoples intent (putting on a facade for personal interests)
Potential entrapment or abusive risk (some people can determine location just by name & city)
While these dangers are a concern for all who patron online dating services. There are very simple & easy things you can do to prevent yourself from falling victim to the above concerns. These simple little actions are:
Don't provide your real name, but rather use a username such as CityGirl/boy34
Never reveal any personal information such as residence, banking info and names of friends or people that you know
When chatting to a person, be very general and never get too detailed
If you feel that you want to actually meet this person, then take it slow and upgrade to phone conversations and then meet in a public area that has high traffic and or bring a friend with you
Ask the person about something great that they did, then ask them the same question later but in a different way. This is because when you tell the truth, you don't have to think.
Never exchange anything, especially photos before you meet the person.
If you have suspicions about the person your chatting to, then its probably for good reason and should detach yourself from the situation immediately with a courteous good-bye. Never be rude or slanderous online.
If you take these tips and factors into consideration then you drastically reduce the chance of falling victim to people with undesirable attributes that may cause you undue stress or harm. Online dating is a very convenient way of meeting new people but the fog of truth it what makes is dangerous if not administered in a responsible fashion.
