Finding friends on the Internet

Looking for a few new chums online but don't know where to start? Relax. You're far from alone. There are literally millions of people online who are in the same position, and they'd be all too happy to make your acquaintance. You just need to look in the right places for them. In many ways it's much easier to make friends online than it is in real life, so long as you go about the task with some intelligence.

Here are a few things you can do to find new and interesting people online. Just keep in mind to not trust them with your personal information too quickly, as you never know exactly what you're getting into when you talk to somebody new.

1.) Online forums. Got some hobbies? Of course you do. And chances are good, unless it's some incredibly strange one like llama riding, that there are plenty of others out there who share your passion. Hunt down a website dedicated to your hobby and hop on its forum (as the vast majority of big sites now have forums). Register and you'll be talking to like-minded people willing to be friends in no time. This works well for people of a similar age group, as well.

2.) Online chats. Are you a teen? Go jump on a teen chat. There are probably thousands of them operating as I type this sentence, and they're all really, really easy to find. The same goes for forums as with chats, as well: if you've got a hobby or interest, there will be a chat relegated to it. Your best chance to talk to people is probably in the evening, however, as most people don't have time for chats during the day.

3.) Online games. Games with a multi-player community are especially good ways of making friends, as you'll forge bonds through the fires of war. (Or whatever the game may be. Most of them have to do with killing in some way, though.) Not only will you have team mates whom you can rely on in tough times, you'll have friends with, yet again, a common interest.

4.) Social sites. Think Facebook for this. You can easily hunt down people who live close to you and not only engage them online, but possibly offline as well. Romance-seeking sites work well for this, too, though you might not want to go down that road if you're not actually looking for a romantic encounter. (Girls especially. Guys online are hounds.)

5.) Comment pages. Whenever somebody posts an article or a blog entry, feel free to comment with your two cents. You may just make a friend in the process.

6.) Person to person chats. MSN, AIM, ICQ... there are a fair number, and it seems like everybody has one. Not only can you use these programs for meeting new people, but they're good for keeping constant tabs with those you've already met.

Finding friends online is much easier than some might have you think. It can take little less than ten or fifteen minutes to track down a potential best friend, as long as you stick to your interests and find somebody who's as legitimate as they say.
