I live in Canada so I was legally allowed to consume alcohol at the age of nineteen, so I guess in a way I am biased to this arguement. Now Canadian students do drink, and drink quite alot but I think that the legal age difference does cut down on some of it.
When I turned 19, I drank. I drank on Thursday, Friday and Saturday religiously, then the odd Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Was this behaviour good, probably not, but I was not thinking about it then. By the age of 21, I had grown tired of the life style and settled down. I had a steady boyfriend and began to work on my career, by the time I was 28 I had been promoted four times.
If I had decided to go to college it would have been around the time of 21 because of my finacial situation. I would have had to work to get cash, and I know that there are thousands out there in the same situation. Now if the legal age in my country had been 21, I would have started my binge drinking at that age. I would have enetered the bar scene two years later and my life would right now be two years behind. So in a nut shell, I matured two years faster living in Ontario than I would have living in the States.
So let's look at this as though I had gone to university. I am at the ripe old age of 21 and am attending my first year of university. I have already known the effects of binge drinking and I am getting ready for my life ahead. I can make educated decisions on hitting the frat parties, I know what to expect because I am an experienced drinker. I know my limits and can make the decisions based on personal experience. Chances of me getting into trouble have gone down ten fold compared to the person that had never consumed alcohol. I get invited to a keg party and now that I am around people I do not know. I pass on the game of quarters but agree to do a beer bong. I have two or three more beers, I feel the first effects of the alcohol and stop drinking. I know that any more may get me drunk.
Now, I am an American young adult. I am heading to college at 21. I have never really drank because of my age. I get introduced to my first frat party. I am introduced to the game of quarters. This is where one person snaps a quarter at a jar or a cup and if they make it they chose another to jug a beer. I have now consumed six beers in less than half an hour. I do not know the effects of it and really I am just feeling a little different. Within the hour I have lost all my inhibitions. Next comes the beer bong, I down another two
