Breast milk is by far, the best food for infants. In fact breast feeding is the golden rule when we talk about infant feeding.
These are some useful tips for a successful breastfeeding.
Tip 1 : Be prepared
Mums to be should psychologically prepare for breast feeding early during her pregnancy. By having a positive mental attitude your body will adopt well and being mentally calmer. It is also wise to gather information from elders or experienced mom about breast feeding and baby reactions.
Tip 2 : Technique of breast feeding
Breast feeding should be started soon, preferably within half to one hour after birth. The baby is naturally most alert during this period.
Try to understand his reaction signaling his desire to be fed. A demand feeding will ensure your milk supply is enough. Also make sure that your baby is well attached to your breast during breast feeding. A lovely hug will send a positive energy to the baby.
Find a comfortable position for both of you and baby. Breastfeeding can be done either sitting or sleeping.
Tip 3 : How to breast feed
Wear clothes and brasseries that open in front so that you don't have to undress each time to breast feed. Make sure your hands are clean before you begin.
After a feed on each breast, hold baby upright - sitting on your lap or with his head resting on your shoulder- and gently pat or rub his back. This helps him to burp or bring up any swallowed air.
Once feeding is over, clean your breasts and let them dry naturally. Rub lanolin cream on your nipples and areola to prevent the skin from cracking.
Tip 4 : Nutrition for the mother
Drink enough water every day. Eat well, and refer your food preferences with the food pyramid as the guide. Try to have a generous serving of protein-rich foods such as fish, eggs, chicken, meat, liver or pulses.
For calcium supply, drink one to two glasses of low fat milk with other calcium rich foods like sardines, soy-bean products, yogurt and cheese. Try to add an extra serving of rice or other cereals for increased energy needs. Don't be too choosy. Remember, it's for the sake of your baby's health.
Tip 5: Continuing effort
Try to continue breast feeding your baby for up to two years if possible. When the baby reached six months old, it is OK to introduce some solid foods to him.
With a little advanced planning and determination, breast feeding is possible even to working mums. With a whole host of benefits to both baby and mum, breast feeding is something that should not be given a miss!
