A few people don't need a guide to cooking fish on a grill, especially if we are fish lovers but for most of us that are trying this out for the first time will appreciate information on how to cook the most delicious healthy meal possible. There are many techniques for cooking fish and each one is dependent on which type of fish you're grilling. Although fish is wonderful on its own there are different ways you can prepare it on the grill.

Knowing your fish before you start

You should know your fish and the best way to cook them before you start grilling. You will find the best fish for grilling directly on the grill are fish that are very firm and these include shark, tuna and swordfish. When you choose thick fish it doesn't require delicate handling like some others. A rule of thumb is to choose fish that is at least one inch thick, this will make a presentation that will be beautiful as well as tasty.

When shopping for your fish if you notice that it is soft textured or the color is changed to dark shades in places on the fish and smells of fish oil then you do not have fresh fish. The best fish you can choose for grilling is a fish that is firm to the touch.

Flavor enhancing fish

Your fish flavor will depend on a few things such as what type of grill you're using and what kind of flavor you want your fish to have. Some people like their fish with a simple mixture of lemon, butter and parsley but there are other ways for different flavors. If you use a gas grill then you can have a smoked flavor such as hickory. This can be done fairly easily by placing hickory chips at the bottom of your grill. Now that you have the smell of hickory going it is easy to add other sea food such as shrimp and scallop but these have to be placed on water soaked skewers.

Grilling flaky fish

Most people shy away from cooking flaky fish with the thought it will fall apart into the grill but it can be done without causing a catastrophe. If you want to cook perch, snapper or flounder use a simple hinged wire basket. This will help keep your fish together and not let it fall into the grill. Baskets are also good for cooking whole salmon and trout. If you are cooking shark or tuna you can cook it directly on the grill, this type of fish is tougher than other kinds and will take a little longer to marinate and cook. Always be attentive when cooking fish some kinds of fish don't take very long and can be done in a matter of minutes while others need a bit longer time but all
