How can a man be great in life?

by Jason Greer

Created on: June 03, 2009

The question of how a man truly achieves greatness in his life is one of those questions that has more answers than anyone could possibly count. In our society today, the term "great" has become one of those words that has been used so much it has almost lost it's meaning, much like the words love and marriage. In this day and age, typically in pop culture" all you need is one hit song or an appearence in an over hyped big budgeted flick to get the word great tacked onto your name tag, so in order to answer the question for those that truly want to know how to achieve greatness in their lives one must dig down deep into what the word is supposed to mean. Aside from the actual definition given in your standard dictionaries, when you hear the word great typically you think of people, places, or things that have some sort of defining feature that makes it stand out amongst everything else. Greatness is also often viewed with a ancient warrior-esq mentality as depicted in the movie Troy, where greatness is determined by how the world will remember your name after your time. The two examples previously listed are two of the many popular ways to judge how a man can attain greatness in his life. However it does pose the question; is achieving greatness something only a select few ever actually achieve? Another question that must be asked before answering the question of how a man attains greatness is whether or not being great is determined by others, and if so who is the judge and what are the criteria to get your name etched into the anals of time as one of the "greats"?

Before we decide how greatness is achieved one must answer a few other questions in order to discover what greatness actually is as like love there are multiple forms of greatness. The first question asks if greatness is only meant for a select chosen few to attain? This particular question calls for a slightly more complicated answer than a yes or a no, because in ways it encompases both. It is a fact that each and every single human being walking this Earth is different in their own way. There are not two people on this planet that are the exact same, so having said that now consider the things that make us different. A few of the things that make each one of us different from the others are our physical appearences, skills, talents, and experiences. In certain aspects in life especially in American culture talent and skill is something that seperates the kings from the peasents.
