Video game reviews: Call of Cthulhu, Dark Corners of the Earth (Xbox)

over from other Survival Horror games, and is pretty standard throughout the genre. However, I never liked this in other games, and in this game it is a SERIOUS problem. The game-play for the first hour or two does NOT favour this approach, and leads instead to massive frustration.

There are really only one or two parts of the game that suffer because of this, but it makes them into a NIGHTMARE. For example, in one your character is being chased by monsters, and must escape at all costs. Being caught means the character will certainly DIE, as you do not (yet) have a weapon and cannot defend yourself. This sequence is well thought out, creepy, dramatic, and full of suspense, but if you make ONE mistake, you have to do it over again. And if you aren't quick on your feet, you WILL do it over again. And again. And again. If you could save anywhere, this would be one of the best parts of the game, but it is kept from being too good because of the Save Point system. Instead, this one part can be so frustrating some players give up in disgust. This is sad, because then they miss the rest of the game, which is FAR better.

Also, this is a TOUGH game. It has several difficulty settings, but I always play it on the lowest one, which is plenty lethal for me.

Overall, however, this is also an AMAZING game. It's challenging, but beyond two really hard parts in the first couple hours of game-play, both of which only require a bit of practice to get right, the Save Points aren't a serious problem. This game is undervalued, and often overlooked. It's hard to find, but not impossible, and is an absolute MUST HAVE for fans of H. P. Lovecraft, as well as Horror or Mystery fans of any kind.
