The best contraceptive

by Laura Mullins

Created on: June 02, 2009

There are many forms of contraception available; each has its own advantages and disadvantages so it is important to find the method that is best for you. The many types available include: barrier methods such as condoms; hormone based methods such as the contraceptive pill; methods that prevent implantation such as the Intrauterine device (IUD); medical procedures such as sterilisation, and natural planning methods.

Condoms are one of the most effective and widely used form of contraception. There are both male and female condoms but female condoms are 3% less effective and are not widely available; some people are unaware that female condoms even exist!

Male condoms are 98% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancies. They are also one of the few types of contraception that protect against STIs.

Condoms are only effective if used correctly; even if they are used correctly, things may happen that may make them less effective. For example, if it splits or slips off because it is the wrong size then it gives no protection to the user. The use of oil based products during intercourse can also damage latex which will impair the performance of the condom.

If barrier protection doesn't appeal, hormone based contraception may be used. The Combined Pill (COC) is a very popular form of contraception. It is over 99% effective if taken according to instructions. They are taken by the female for 21 out of every 28 days. COC works by providing the user with both estrogen and progestogen; taken together, these hormones stop ovulation. They thicken cervical mucus to prevent sperm reaching an egg and they thin the lining of the uterus to prevent an egg implanting.

There are many problems with this type of contraception. If the user forgets to take the pill regularly then effectiveness is reduced. The use of antibiotics also increases the risk of pregnancy. There may also be other side effects such as weight gain, headaches, nausea and diarrhoea.

There are many additional benefits of taking COC. There are many different types of pill and some can be used to treat other existing medical conditions such as acne. They have also been proven to reduce the risk of cancer of the ovary, uterus and colon. There are side effects but the risks are minimal; if the user does experience side effects their GP may recommend trying a different type of pill.

If hormone based contraception appeals but it is inconvenient to remember to take a pill everyday then
