For a few years now, popular video games have been translating in to films and most of them have been a nightmare, which is a shame. When news hits of a video game been make in to a film, people get excited but more often then not, end up disappointed
Uwe Boll, a German director and almost ever film he has made has started from a video game and he is currently voted the worst director at the minute and has been asked to resign.
Alone in the Dark: A 2005 film from Uwe Boll and was an absolute nightmare form the start. It starting Christan Slater and Tara Reid, a good cast but a poor film with a poor story. I like the Alone in the Dark games because they are scary and good fun to play and excellent stories with supernatural phenomenas. The film cost $ 20,000,000 to make and rake in $ 8,000,000 worldwide that tells you enough about how bad this film is. No idea why a sequel is been film
Street Fighter: This film was release in 1994 and big buzz about this film because the games are excellent, so the idea of a film based on them was great news for gamers around the world. The problem is it was disappointed and had a story that was bad. It had a high class cast, Jean Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia and Kylie Minogue, the film did have characters from the game such as: Balrog, General M.Bison, Cammy and Guile, characters mainly from the second Street Fighter game.
Final Fantasy: The Spirts Within: This film was released in 2001 and starred Alec Baldwin and Donald Sutherland. I enjoyed this film because it was computer enhanced, had a good story and was directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy role-playing games and was not long, even though the games take forever to complete. It had a references from the games and had a new cast of character instead of taken them from the computer games, which works well. This film was followed in 2005 by Final Fantasy: Advent Children which was a success.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider: A 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig and Iain Glen, this film is good like the games and has a story that the writers of the game would of been proud of. The hunt for a object and stop a organization claiming world domination, sounds like its all been done before but Tomb Raider is done brilliantly, monsters, mystery and history. This was followed in 2005 by The Cradle of Life and a third one is in production but Angelina Jolie will not reprise her role as Ms Croft.
Doom: This film from 2005 should not of seen the light of day and the people who done this should not been able to make films anymore. Now I must admit I'm not a big fan of the games but I was looking forward to this. It stars Karl Urban, Dwain Johnson AKA The Rock and Rosemaud Pike and was set on Mars. This film was not scary like the games were and the actors didn't seem to care. It did include monsters from the game and at the end it changes in to a first-person perspective like in the game, which does have a few scares in but that is all that is good about this film. The characters have weird names like Reaper, The Kid, Destroyer and The Duke. This film was so bad that it got the voted one of the worst films based on a video game.
So it turns out that it is hard to make films from video games and it seems that it doesn't work most of the time. Future titles have already been recommened: Tekken, God of War, Prince of Persia and Bioshock which are good games, but will these titles worked as video games?
We wait and see.
