- particularly with dates. Some countries have the month/day/year requirement, which is confusing for others, who are used to the day/month/year format.
Always keep your boarding passes accessible. You'll need to show them more than once. Don't crack silly jokes if you're in an alien environment. They've heard them all before, and an "off the cuff" remark could suddenly draw unwelcome attention from an already exasperated official. Smile, be polite, and don't grumble. Everyone's got to go through this, so just grin and bear it.
So you're finally on the plane. Relax. You're here for the long haul and the pilot has taken control. When the seat belt sign goes off, kick off your shoes, chill out and wallow in all the attention you will receive from the cabin crew. They want a safe and peaceful journey just as much as you do - so go with the flow!
Don't be afraid of pressing the assistant light; don't get annoyed at the passenger in front who has reclined his seat right under your nose! It won't be a bother unless you are eating. Competent staff are aware of this problem every time they serve the food. Just be reasonable, calm, and talk to your hosts. They are there to help you.
And if you find yourself travelling on an Islamic airline, don't be surprised when prayers to Allah are broadcast over the tannoy prior to take off. Use it for your own contemplation, and respect them for it. Consider mankind's incredible technological ability which got you in the air, because whoever is your god - it's the pilots and their crew who will be your guiding light.
By the way, did you darn those socks? There's nothing more exposed than a big toe! Enjoy your flight.
