One thing that nutritionists and dieticians find perplexing is that healthy foods are so affordable. Yet most people will prefer to eat unhealthy foods which are relatively much more expensive.
This is really a disturbing paradox. But we can put it down to the vagaries of human nature and move on.
For those who want to eat healthy and affordable food, there isn't any problem with this. In a family set-up, it is possible to eat good and nourishing food at very affordable prices. All you need is a bit of creativity and you can transform some underestimated food items to a king's banquet.
The most important thing to note here is that you are eating for your health and you are eating in accordance with your budget. Therefore, you should not have much regard for name foods or fancy packaging. Keep it simple and keep it healthy.
Salads:
The vegetable salad is one of the greatest things that have ever happened to good eating habits. Just get your fresh vegetables together: cabbage, lettuce, carrots, peas, spring onions, boiled potatoes and a bit of home made beef. You can also add hard boiled eggs, cucumber and green pepper. Add a bit of salad cream or better still, replace salad cream with avocados and you have prepared a most nourishing feast. This would cost you the earth in a fancy restaurant. But at home, it is good food for a very low price.
Buy Raw Food in Bulk:
Fortunately, science and genetics has ensured that we don't have to wait for the seasons before we eat any food of our choice. For this reason, you can simply load up on raw foods and cook at your convenience. Potatoes, corn, beans, soybean, plantains and eggs are relatively cheap. All these are get ingredients from which we can prepare exotic dishes. For preparation, you can simply go Mexican or better still go African and you are guaranteed good food and great taste as well.
Make Your Own Drinks:
Instead of spending a lot of money on fruit juices, (read water and sugar, plus flavors) you can prepare your own lemonades at home. This saves you money and ensures that you don't run any risks by the same token; you can make your own yogurts and fruits salads, very cheap, very healthy and very beneficial to you and your family.
Finally, avoid waste and don't eat out if you can help it. These are some of the ways you can eat very healthy foods without having to spend a fortune on food bills.
