every bit of belief that this could just be 'the' year, well, that was until Rafa started shuffling his pack profusely in the name of rotation and tactical surprise. Surprise, oh yes.
The gaffer's a prolific magician. One week you see his 23 million dollar signing crediting an impressive hat trick to his name and in the next, poof, he mysteriously disappears from the starting lineup. Forget price tags and reputations.
A team that is playing well, comprising a settled midfield and burgeoning partnership in attack, should be allowed to show what it can do against anyone when they're playing well together and that is tantamount to any team's success on the domestic front.
Liverpool fans are noted for their patience and magnanimity when it comes to their mangers delivering domestic success but with the recent takeover of the club by American consortiums and the massive injection of cash into the transfer budget it wouldn't be long till they start calling for Rafa's head. He has single handedly lifted Liverpool back to the pinnacle of European football but the great Liverpool teams of the 70s and 80s achieved unparalleled domestic dominance before moving on to Europe.
It's going to take a herculean effort to emulate the ascendancy achieved by Liverpool teams of the Shankly and Paisley era. Benitez isn't going to replicate any kind of success if he doesn't put a stop to his rotation policy. He needs to find his best team, worthy of matching any side, tactically flexible and technically acute - he needs to find his winning team. Benitez is living on borrowed time and he has to act fast.
As cacophony of jeers fill the stands of Anfield, Liverpool fans all over the world are beginning to hum to the beat of In Rafa We No Longer Trust.
