there any wonder lawyers are regarded so lowly?

Here's my advice. Never, never, ever speak to a police officer without a lawyer for any situation beyond a traffic citation. Find the best, and probably the most expensive lawyer you can find who specializes in exactly what you need. Think of it like a doctor and surgery. You want someone highly respected and experienced to save your life. And do it quickly. Get in front of it before you think it's necessary. My friend willingly walked into the police station to answer a few questions, thinking it would only take a few minutes because the charges were absurd and his reputation was impeccable. He walked out in hand and ankle cuffs and into a jail after being arrested. He didn't have a lawyer and hadn't even thought about getting one. He was blind-sided and unprepared, which may have contributed to his appearance as a novice. Finally, expect the worst pressure you can imagine. It is partly a game of chicken. It is partly a game of appearances. Don't give up, don't give in, and appear confident and resolute, even if inside your world is falling apart. If you take any other stance, your world will almost certainly fall apart for they will bring endless resources to bear and bulldoze you over.
