First time travelers are so excited about going away, safety isn't always in their minds until something bad happens. They pack all the right clothes for a destination they've researched. Maps and directions have been downloaded and printed. Travel reservations have been confirmed and reconfirmed. Soon, the happy vacationers are on their way to fun and relaxation.
There are many things that can go wrong on a trip. Especially for the unprepared traveler. The most common issue many travelers face, whether experienced or a rookie, is loss due to theft.
* When we were kids, our parents taught us not to trust strangers. This is also a good piece of advice for people traveling in unfamiliar territory. If you don't know someone, why ask them a question that exposes your vulnerability. Scam artist are very good at acting like they are the person you need. They are groomed to sense what you may be seeking and are willing to HELP you get what ever you need. Or so they say. Unfortunately, it could cost you the very trip you've looked forward to. Be wary of strangers. Mom knew best.
* The first thing you should do when you enter your hotel room, is double bolt the door. Many invasions occur shortly after checking in. At this point, your guard is down and you obviously have most of your travel dollars. Some thieves prefer you to be in the room while robbing it. This way, they get access to credit cards and debit cards. Unless you are willing to risk losing your vacation on day one, double bolt the door once you are safely in the room.
* If you have windows that open, make sure they are securely locked. Thieves love entering rooms through an unlocked window and wreaking havoc to your trip. Glass sliding doors are easy to open even when locked. Make sure the window is secured. Make sure your trip does not go right out the window.
* A great little gadget to take along in your luggage is a door stop. Those little wedges that keep our doors open while at home, may be the perfect way to keep ruthless and bold criminals from entering your room while you are sleeping. Two or three of those little wedges slid at the bottom of your door, will ensure no one can catches you off guard. Today's door wedges come with alarms that emit a pulsating loud siren when disturbed. A loud sudden noise is sure to scare even the most brazen thief.
* Make sure you have a cell phone with 911 programmed. You never know when you may need to get help quick. If there is a fire or power outage, the hotel phone may not work. Or you may have to dial while on the move. Cell phones are a great way to keep in touch with family and friends back home, as well as emergency personal if needed.
* Bring a map if you are heading out for a drive in search of a place you have never been. Odds are, if you don't know where you are going, you may never get there. Asking the wrong person for directions may make it worse. If you get lost, you risk running out of gas, or running into a problem you are not prepared for. Ask the hotel employees for maps and directions if you do not have your own.
* Be careful where you eat. Drink only bottled water. Illness is another sure way to ruin a good time. Spending the majority of your trip in bed or on the toilet will make your time memorable. Are those the vacation memories you want?
Traveling is a great way to see the world. Traveling safe and smart makes all the difference. If you are about to enjoy your first trip, great. All will go well as long as you travel like your a seasoned veteran. The only people who know you are a rookie, is you. Keep it that way. Travel smart.
