I learned to swim when I was five
Jumped in the deep end with my best friend
Our eyes opened to our new watery underworld
Where arms and legs moved in slow motion
Days spent at the pool in the hot sun
Away from mums and dogs and garden hoses
Screams and whistles as we ran to jump
Water droplets on our shiny skin
That eerie silence we found diving deep
To fetch a stone or a penny
Our lungs almost splitting as we raced up for air
Into the bright light and expanse of glittering blue
September and back to school
The pool covered over against the leaves
And then drained to leave our waterworld
Just a big blue hole
