Fiction writing: The importance of your character's thoughts

film is to have her mutinously muttering to herself after the boss goes off to play golf. You, however, the writer can tell the reader exactly what she is thinking, what she is feeling and even about her fantasy in which she stabs her boss and takes over his position without her expression changing in the slightest. Then the reader can see this character has homicidal tendencies too. Makes for a much more interesting read if we know this.

The memories of the character can also come into play as a stimulus for more introspective thoughts. The character sees a happy little boy passing in front of her holding a big red balloon and sends her back in time when a big red balloon was all she needed to make her happy. How she misses that wonderful, carefree feeling! But it's gone now and will never return making her sad. Only her thoughts perhaps followed by a sigh could tell the reader this.

The more the writer shows of the character's thoughts, the more the reader will understand her and with understanding the reader will either love or hate her. Either is preferred to indifference which can kill a story and the reader's interest in it. Who wants to read a novel in which the main character is flat and not interesting? It is the character's thoughts that will make the reader connect with her, sympathetic towards her and curious to know what will happen to her by the end of the story.

Now you see the importance of the thoughts of a character in fiction writing. You will be able to reveal so much more about your character through her thoughts than just through her actions. You clearly can see the character's thoughts can make or break the story. Plus when anyone tells you the movie is better than the book, you'll know they have rocks for brains.
