How to outsmart weight gain

Weight gain can be a sneaky thing. You may be looking to avoid re-gaining weight after a successful diet or attempting to curb the effects of a slowing metabolism; either way, even the smartest dieter needs some tricks up his or her sleeve to out-smart those extra pounds.

Tip #1: Keep track of your weight.

Even if you are currently healthy and comfortable, you should weigh yourself several times a week. Weight gain can be gradual and easy to ignore, especially if you can't bear the thought of a strict diet and exercise regimen. The key here is not to grow complacent.

If you do put on weight, don't beat yourself up. Instead, have a specific, concrete contingency plan in place to take care of the extra pound or two. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and it's easier to shed two pounds than it is to lose five. Plus, you'll feel great about yourself when the number is back where you want it to be.

Tip #2: Vary your workouts.

Make sure that you don't take the "routine" part of your fitness routine too literally. Doing the same workouts day in and day out is less effective than varying your regimen; not only does that habit possibly neglect some muscle groups, but the muscles that are being worked will adapt to perform those exercises with the least amount of exertion, leading to a plateau or decline in results.

In addition, you're likely to get bored with the same old routine, and put less effort into your movements. The key here is to keep you on your toes (sometimes literally!). Try a new class at the gym, ask a friend to teach you his or her favorite sport, or try an introductory session with a trainer. Your muscles may be sore for a few days, but you'll see renewed results.

Tip #3: Re-acquaint yourself with portion sizes.

Strict dieting is no fun and can be difficult and time-consuming. It's much more effective to stick to a healthy, reasonable eating plan with controlled portion sizes.

At least once a week, cook for yourself and carefully measure out your portions. This activity may seem almost obsessive, but it's worth it; you'll be less likely to mindlessly overeat at home, and you'll feel more confident with your food choices and eating at restaurants.

Remember, weight gain may be sneaky, but it is not inevitable. With a few well-planned strategies, you'll soon be holding off the weight gain and being your best you!
