If you look solely at the word Christian, Mormons can be considered Christians since both Christians and Mormons follow Christ. Where the argument lies is that Christ is different for both religions. Christianity's Christ is a different being with a different background and different doctrine than the Mormon Christ. Kind of like a guy named Mike Jones, there are probably quite a few with the same name, but they are all different; so is the same with the name Jesus Christ.
Christians believe in One God who created Heaven and Earth; His Son Jesus who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, lived on Earth as 100% God and 100% man, died on the cross, was buried, and was raised from the dead and ascended into Heaven; The Holy Spirit who lives in us, speaks to us for God and speaks to God for us. Christians also believe in the Bible as the one and only written word of God. Last but not least, Christians believe in the catholic faith (even though most don't know it is called that) which is the Triune God: Father, Son, Spirit; Three parts in one God.
Mormons believe that God was once a sinful human like us and attained his priesthood and thus Godhood (his own planet). They also believe Jesus was Satan's brother and both were physically conceived by God and Mary. God picked his son Jesus to be savior of the world over Satan because Jesus had the better idea that humans should have free will. They believe that the Bible is less important than other Mormon books such as the Book of Mormon and is not even accurately translated. They also believe God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost are three separate entities.
There are more differences in the two religions in smaller issues of doctrine: baptism of the dead, race and priesthood, consumption of caffeine or nicotine, marriage in heaven, modern day prophets, Jesus' teaching to the Indians, Joseph Smith's visions, and others. There are so many differences that if the average person knew even a little of this, they'd see that the two are not the same thing.
These are two totally different beliefs about the same person, thus they cannot be considered the same religion. Mormonism claims to be Christianity probably because Christianity is so big around the world that they want to be grouped together; otherwise, they may be called, officially, a cult.
Just because Christians and Mormons both use the term Christ does not mean they are both Christians. I am not at all against Mormons or their church, but am concerned about the truth being known.
